The Westwood Lodge 8046

History of the Westwood Lodge No. 8046

In February 1962, a committee was formed from the Lesney Park Lodge to find a new masonic centre in the borough of Bexley. Other local Lodges became involved and soon the ‘North Kent Masonic Hall Company Ltd’ was formed. The Sanctum club was purchased by the members of the local Lodges and The Westwood Masonic Centre was formed.

Members of the Lodges that met at the new Westwood Masonic Centre in Welling wanted to form a Lodge that carried the name of the new centre. A petition to form this new Lodge was successful and Westwood Lodge No. 8046 was consecrated on the 5th October 1965.

The founders of the Westwood Lodge No. 8046 were from 6 members of The Lodge of Loyalty No. 7156, 7 members of The Union Waterloo Lodge No. 13, 2 members of Lesney Park Lodge No. 3965 and another 16 members from 15 different Lodges, which gives an indication that from the earliest days the Lodge has truly consisted of a Brotherhood of Masons.

A large proportion of the members were local businessmen and the Lodge met on a Wednesday with meeting commencing at 3.30 pm. Wednesday was half day closing in the 1960s, hence the reason for the original start time.

The Most Worshipful the Grand Master the Rt. Hon. The Earl of Scarbrough, K.G., G.C.S.I., G.C.I.E., G.C.V.O., T.D., having been graciously pleased to grant a Warrant or Charter dated the 9th June 1965, authorising Petitioners to meet as a Lodge under the title of the Westwood Lodge No. 8046, Province of West Kent, the Lodge shall hold Meetings in accordance therewith at the Westwood Masonic Centre, Bellegrove Road, Welling, Kent.

The Lodge was solemnly consecrated at the Town Hall, Gravesend, Kent, on Tuesday, 5th October 1965, by the Right Worshipful the Provincial Grand Master for Kent, The Right Hon.
